Suddenly, the room erupted with applause and hoots and hollers from everyone, in every corner. The boys were the loudest of all. Brian engulfed Jessica in a hug lifting her off the floor. After putting her down Kevin, Howie, and AJ followed his lead. She was blushing profusely and when Denise walked up to her and patted her shoulder she jumped slightly.
"So are we a team, or not?" she asked Jessica with a huge smile on her face. "Cause let me tell you honey... you are amazing," Denise was beaming. Jessica looked around at everyone in the room who were awaiting an answer on the edges of their seats. She walked over to Nick and wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his chest. He could feel her body trembling, so he rubbed her back, hoping to comfort her. She mumbled something into his shirt and Nick laughed unconsciously.
"What did you say?" he asked her to repeat herself.
Jessica backed away enough to look Nick in the eye. She smiled slightly. "I said..." she paused and turned around to look at Denise. "Let's do it."
Denise squealed like a teenager and dragged Jess away from Nick and hugged her herself. "Ooooh, this is going to be the best! I'm so happy!"
Jessica hugged her back tightly. "Thank you for this opportunity and..." she was cut off by another tap on her shoulder. She turned around to face Sanya, who was trying to hold back her screams.
"Hug me, now!" she had walked in while they were singing and was stunned. Jessica complied and hugged her best friend who was ecstatic. "Oh my god! Why didn't you ever sing like that for me!?"
"Oopsie," Jessica shrugged and Sanya hit her arm. "Ow, I'm sorry, ok?"
"Yeah, yeah," she said sarcastically, like she says everything else. Then the two of them looked at each other and simultaneously screamed. Everyone else in the room came up to congratulate Jessica, and she thanked them before they went back to what they were doing before her "premiere".
Nick came behind Jessica once people had filtered out a little bit. "Hey, Babe," he whispered in her ear. Jessica took his arms and wrapped them around herself like a blanket. "Do you think you're ready for all of this?"
"Definitely. I'm ready for anything life is gonna throw my way," she giggled as he held her tighter. "Have I thanked you in the past 5 minutes?"
"For what?"
"For everything. I never seem to have anything bad happen to me when I'm with you. Things just keep getting better," she turned around to look at him. "So thank you for all of this, and for just... being with me," she sighed at a loss for words.
Nick kissed Jessica's lips lightly. "I love you. I'd do anything for you," he leaned his forehead against hers.
Jessica blushed and kissed him back gently. "So, don't you have a show to do?"
"I've got an hour till the sound check, why?" he watched the gold flecks in her eyes dance about.
"No reason," she hit his chest. "I know what you we're thinking."
Nick tried to look at her innocently but it wasn't working. "So what do you wanna do?"
"Find my daughter," Jessica thought out loud and pulled Nick around the room. They stopped in front of the TV to see a racing game on the screen and the car still sitting at the first gate, in last place. When they looked over the couch, they saw Kayci sitting next to Zachary with her head on his shoulder, asleep. He had his head leaning back on hers, sound asleep as well. "This is too cute," Jessica laughed quietly so she wouldn't wake the two children up.
"C'mon. We'll take them to my dressing room," Nick offered and Jessica agreed. She carefully picked up Kayci while Nick picked up Zach, and they each carried them to his dressing room. They laid them down on Nick's couch so they were on opposite sides. "We'll check up on them in a couple of hours."
"What if they wake up?"
"Then they'll just have to find something to do in here," Nick shrugged and turned around to see Jessica giving him a not-so-happy-about-that look. "Ok, ok. I'll leave my door unlocked and a note, happy?"
"Much better," Jessica quirked and they walked over to a table and Nick sat down and pulled Jess on his lap. He began writing on the paper and she started to giggle.
"What's so funny?"
"You have worse handwriting than my daughter," she choked back on her words, trying to contain her laughter.
"Shut up," Nick muttered, like a kid.
"Awww, poor baby," she let a few giggles slip out. "Here," she got a new sheet of paper and took the pen out of his hands. "Watch a pro," Jessica said and began to write. Nick held her hand while she was writing and began kissing her neck. "Nick-"
"Shhhh... just read," he said and began to scribble something down, guiding her hand movements with his own. It read: I wanna make love to my girlfriend right now.
"Nick, there are kids in the room," she laughed out loud at his eagerness and then quickly shut herself up again. Jessica got up off of his lap and turned around.
"I'll be quiet. Will you?" he asked playfully as she got up to face him. He held her waist and brought her body closer to his own. Nick pulled up on her shirt a little to expose her stomach, and then kissed it lightly. He licked at her belly button which made her giggle.
"Stop," she begged and sat down on his lap facing him. "We are not doing that right now," she whispered and held his face in between her hands.
"Fine, but that won't stop me from kissing you," Nick smiled mischievously and leaned in to Jessica's lips when they heard giggling. They both turned to look at the two children who were now pretending to be asleep.
"Kayci Ayanna Robinson, how long have you been awake?" Jessica asked and got up out of Nick's grasp reluctantly. She grabbed her daughter up off of the chair and held her in the air.
"For a few seconds. You and Nick were about to kiss," Kayci giggled and made little, teasing kissy noises.
"You little rascal!" Jessica threw Kayci up and caught her again. She put her down on the floor and began tickling her furiously. "You were spying on me!"
Zachary and Nick just watched in amusement. They looked at each other, nodded and quietly backed out of the room.
"Hey!" Kayci yelled through her laughter when she noticed them retreating.
"Yeah! Where do you think you're going?" Jessica huffed as she let up on Cici.
The two boys looked at each other questioningly. "We're leaving before you divert your attack on us." Nick explained.
"Good idea!" Kayci jumped up and hopped on Jessica's back. "After them!"
Zach looked at Nick with a grin of hope. He smiled back and pulled the boy up on his back as he ran down the corridor. Jessica was hot on his heels as they ran back into the lounge area. People looked up from what they were doing and broke out into fits of laughter. They passed Sanya, Brian, AJ, and Megan, who were all talking on the couch.
"They are psychos, I tell ya," AJ shook his head.
"No one can compare to you, AJ," Brian shook his head the same way and Sanya laughed.
"But see, then again. No one comes close to your insane antics, Bri," she added and AJ gave her a high five.
"See, Rok? You don't have room to talk," he laughed back.
Brian grumbled something of a response and Megan looked around playfully. "Did you hear something?"
"No, it was just your imagination, running away..." AJ began to say but stopped when Nick ran past the couch again. "...with your brother," he finished and Megan shrugged.
"Hey! He can take that 6 year old outta my hair any day."
"You know what?" Sanya said while watching the couple run around with kids on their backs. "When they get married and have a family of their own they are gonna be great parents together."
Brian wrapped his arms around Sanya and pulled her back against his chest. "Ya know, I was thinking the same exact thing."
Just then, Jane Carter walked in the room and noticed her son a little busy. So, she strolled over to the couch where she saw two of her adopted children. "Hello, Brian. AJ," she leaned down to give Brian a kiss on the cheek and did the same for AJ.
"Hi, Jane," the boys said in unison. "What's up?" Brian asked.
"I just came down for the final show and all. Since the family came back for the holidays," she explained and they all nodded in understanding. "So, what is my son doing?"
"Playing around with my brother. I'm Megan," she said politely and outstretched her hand and Mrs. Carter shook it firmly. She and Sanya had met a while ago on her only trip out to visit Brian.
"I see."
"It's nice to see you again, Jane," Sanya smiled at her and she smiled back.
"Good to see you too, Sanya. I also see you're keeping Brian in check."
"I'm trying my best," Sanya giggled as Brian nudged her. "Watch it buddy! It's the truth."
He just pouted in response.
"So, how's Jessica?" Jane asked as she watched Nick trip and fall over. Jess and Kayci quickly pounced on top of the two in a whirl of tickles.
"She's great," Sanya answered since she was the closest to Jessica. "We were just saying how she and Nick were going to have a beautiful family one day," she smirked at the group of four, on the floor in a tickle war. "It's gonna be one helluva wedding for those too. I can see it now," Sanya used her hands to show it as if it was on a screen. "Family. Friends... and the media."
"How is Jessica's family? In fact, I don't think I've ever heard about them," Jane wondered.
"Oh," Sanya sighed. "It's kinda a touchy subject. Well..." Sanya struggled back the tears that were threatening to form. "After Jessica told her parents she was pregnant, they became furious. They agreed to let her stay at home until she graduated but after that she had to leave and then they never wanted to hear from her again. The day of her ceremony, as soon as it ended, she came to my house and has been living with me ever since. But we moved a year ago to the place where we live now. They have never called, never cared. So... as far as Jessica is concerned, she doesn't have a family. It's just me, Kayci and her," Sanya was whispering by the end of the story.
Mrs. Carter was horrified by the thought of someone not wanting or caring about their own flesh and blood. "Does Nick know?"
"Yeah. She told him a while ago," Sanya sniffed and Brian held her a little tighter.
"Well... " Jane said standing up. "My son better be smart about all of this. I don't want this girl getting away," she said as Kayci came and tugged on her pants leg. "Hi there, Lil' Bear!" she smiled brightly at her and picked her up.
"Hi, Mama Bear!" Kayci exclaimed and hugged her tightly. "What'cha doin'?" she asked innocently.
"Just talking with everyone," she explained sweetly as Zach stood in front of Megan. Jane looked down at him. "And what's your name?"
"I'm Zachary, but you can call me Zach if ya want," he grinned and she ruffled his hair.
"All right then, Zach. I'm Nick's mom, Jane."
"Really? You don't look old enough to be his mom?" he cocked his head to one side in thought and Megan nudged his arm.
"That wasn't very polite. Sorry about my little brother."
"Oh, it's ok!" Jane laughed. "I'll take that as a compliment," she said and turned to the little girl in her arms. "Now, tell me. Where is my son?" she asked.
"He's playing with my mommy," she said and then whispered. "But knowing them... they're probably kissing."
"I heard that, young lady," Jessica said coming up behind them. "Hi, Mrs. Carter."
"Jane, child. How many times do I have to tell you?" she asked and put Kayci down so she could hug Jessica properly. "You're practically my daughter, anyway."
"Mom?!" Nick said and hugged her too.
"What?! She is!" she shrugged and everyone laughed.
Kevin came back around with Kristin, as did Howie, who now had Lesley with him. They were both introduced to Jane. "We gotta go get ready guys. It's almost time," Kevin said checking his watch, ending the light conversation.
The 4 that were there mumbled under their breath, said good bye, and headed for make-up and wardrobe.
"So, Jess? Have you started making wedding plans yet?" Jane teased.
"No," Jessica smiled and blushed. "We are no where near ready to be married. Why does everyone always think that?"
"Because it's so blatantly obvious," Sanya giggled and pulled Kayci into her lap. "You wouldn't mind having any brothers or sisters, would ya, Kayci?"
"Nope!"
Everyone laughed and Jessica groaned. "You are all nuts," she concluded. "Can we just go sit in the stadium now?" she asked since they were all watching the show that night. All the ladies agreed and made their way out to the reserved box seats which were off to the right of the stage.
